What are Custom Insoles?

Custom Insoles, also known as customised foot orthoses or custom orthotics, are prescription insoles that sit in your shoes and support you when you walk. Podiatrists often prescribe them to help prevent injuries and improve the alignment of your body’s structures. Customs insoles are designed to either support the natural shape of your feet or to realign any abnormalities, such as flat feet.

How Can Custom Insoles Help?

Each pair of customised foot orthoses is carefully designed by our Podiatrists based on the patient’s condition and lower limb functions. There are hundreds of modifications and designs that we prescribe, and each design has a unique effect on the support on our feet.

Custom insoles are also more than just providing arch support. There are conditions where the design is meant to not provide any arch support because excessive arch support under an unstable foot may cause more problems such as ankle sprains or tendon injuries.

Customised foot orthoses are unique for you. Just like dental braces or prescription glasses, you don’t put on someone else’s.

Functions of Customised Foot Orthoses

The key functions of customised foot orthoses include:

  • Redistributing pressure under the foot
  • Provides cushioning for shock absorption
  • Reduce stress acting on muscles, tendons, joints, and bones
  • Maintain or improve the structural alignment of the body
  • Stabilize or alter our joint motions when walking or running

FAQ

Custom insoles help to support and realign your foot posture, thereby improving the way you walk. If you are suffering from bad foot posture such as flat feet, or you are experiencing discomfort when walking, you may need a pair of custom insoles to help you.

Custom insoles should generally not cause any discomfort. However, for certain conditions such as flat feet, you may need a period to adapt because the insoles are correcting your alignment. During the adaptation period, the changes in the way you walk may cause slight muscle aches in the lower legs and feet in the beginning.

The durability of your custom insoles varies greatly depending on the materials and methods used by your prescriber. On average, a pair of customised foot orthoses should last a minimum of between 3 to 5 years. However, if the material chosen is not durable, you may need to replace them once a year.

At Straits Podiatry, our custom insoles in Singapore are made to last for years. There is no need to replace them sooner unless there is a change in your foot shape.

Generally, you can use your custom insoles in different shoes of similar styles. This means that you can easily switch between sports shoes, sneakers, or even boots. However, if it is heels, flats, or football boots, where the shoe is much narrower, a separate pair of custom insoles may be needed.

Everyone’s feet are different. Therefore customised foot orthoses offer unique support for your feet. They help to support the shape of your feet and realign your posture. In contrast, the over-the-counter insoles are generic and may not support your feet optimally. Furthermore, many over-the-counter insoles are made with silicone or soft gel, which do not have the strength to support our weight.
